Carrus Behavioral Hospital FAQ
Who is a good fit inpatient treatment?
Inpatient treatment at Carrus Behavioral Health Hospital is designed for children and teens ages 5–17 who need intensive, round-the-clock support to stay safe, stabilize, and begin the healing process. This level of care is best for young people who are experiencing
- Severe emotional or behavioral challenges that cannot be safely managed at home or school.
- Suicidal thoughts, self-harm behaviors, or risk of harming others.
- Sudden or worsening mental health symptoms that require immediate stabilization.
- Acute psychiatric conditions such as severe depression, anxiety, trauma responses, or psychosis.
- Crisis situations where outpatient or lower levels of care are not enough to ensure safety and well-being.
Inpatient treatment is a short-term, highly structured program that provides 24/7 supervision, medical support, and therapeutic interventions. The goal is to stabilize your child, provide immediate support, and prepare your family for the next steps in care.
What does a typical day during inpatient treatment look like?
Structure and routine are an important part of healing. At Carrus Behavioral Health Hospital, each day is designed to provide children and teens with a balance of therapeutic activities, education, recreation, and rest—all within a safe and supportive environment.
While schedules are tailored to each child’s needs, a typical day may include
- Morning Check-In – Nurses and staff help your child start the day with vital signs, medication (if prescribed), and setting personal goals.
- Group Therapy Sessions – Led by licensed therapists, these sessions focus on developing coping skills, managing emotions, and building healthy relationships.
- Individual Therapy – One-on-one time with a therapist to work through personal challenges in a supportive setting.
- Family Therapy (scheduled weekly) – Involving parents/guardians to strengthen communication and support systems at home.
- Recreational & Creative Activities – Art, music, or recreational therapy to encourage self-expression, creativity, and stress relief.
- Life Skills & Coping Skills Training – Practical strategies for managing stress, anger, or difficult situations in healthy ways.
- Faith & Spiritual Groups (optional) – Opportunities for spiritual growth and encouragement for families who desire it.
- Evening Reflection & Relaxation – Time to reflect on the day, practice calming techniques, and prepare for restful sleep.
Our goal is to create a structured, nurturing environment that helps children and teens feel supported while building the tools they need for long-term wellness.
How long does treatment last?
The length of inpatient treatment at Carrus Behavioral Health Hospital depends on each child’s unique needs, diagnosis, and progress. Because every child heals at a different pace, there is no “one-size-fits-all” timeline.
On average, most children and teens stay in our inpatient program for 7 to 14 days. During this time, the focus is on safety, stabilization, and beginning the healing process.
From day one, our team is already planning for what comes next. As your child improves, we work with you to create a personalized discharge and aftercare plan—which may include outpatient therapy, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)—to ensure your child continues receiving the right level of support after leaving the hospital.
Our goal is to help your child stabilize quickly, gain the tools they need, and return home safely with a clear plan for ongoing care.
Are parents or caregivers involved?
Absolutely. At Carrus Behavioral Health Hospital, we believe children heal best when their families are actively involved in the process. Parents and caregivers are important partners in treatment and play a key role in supporting long-term success after discharge.
Here’s how families are involved
- Care Team Updates – Our staff keeps parents and caregivers informed of progress, treatment goals, and next steps.
- Parent Education & Support – Guidance and resources to help families understand mental health challenges and learn how to best support their child at home.
- Discharge & Aftercare Planning – Families work directly with our team to create a clear plan for continued care after the hospital stay.
We want parents and caregivers to feel supported, informed, and empowered—because your involvement is one of the most important factors in your child’s recovery journey.
What happens after inpatient treatment ends?
Discharge from inpatient treatment doesn’t mean the journey is over—it means your child is ready for the next step in healing. At Carrus Behavioral Health Hospital, we begin planning for life after discharge from the very first day of care, so you and your child feel prepared and supported.
When inpatient treatment ends, families can expect
- Personalized Discharge Plan – A clear, step-by-step plan tailored to your child’s progress and ongoing needs.
- Aftercare Options – Many children transition to a lower level of care, such as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or outpatient therapy, to maintain stability and continue building skills.
- School & Community Support – Coordination with schools and community resources to help your child successfully return to daily life.
- Family Guidance – Education, resources, and strategies to help parents and caregivers continue supporting their child at home.
- Follow-Up Care – Ongoing communication with your child’s providers to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed.
Our goal is to ensure your child leaves inpatient treatment not only stabilized and safe, but also equipped with the right tools, resources, and supports to continue moving forward.
How do I know if my child needs this level of care?
It’s not always easy to know when a child or teen needs inpatient care. In general, inpatient treatment is recommended when a child’s safety, health, or daily life is at risk, and more support is needed than outpatient therapy can provide.
Your child may benefit from inpatient treatment if they are
- Having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, or showing unsafe behaviors
- At risk of harming themselves or others
- Experiencing severe depression, anxiety, or trauma symptoms that interfere with daily life
- Showing sudden or extreme changes in behavior, mood, or ability to function at home or school
- Struggling with intense emotions or outbursts that cannot be managed in less intensive settings
- In need of 24/7 support and monitoring to stabilize their mental health
If you’re unsure, our admissions team can provide a confidential assessment to help determine the right level of care. You don’t have to make this decision alone—we’re here to guide and support you every step of the way.
Does Insurance Cover Inpatient Care?
In most cases, yes—insurance does cover inpatient mental health treatment for children and teens. At Carrus Behavioral Health Hospital, we work with a wide range of insurance providers to help families access the care their child needs.
Here’s what families can expect
- Insurance Verification – Our admissions team will contact your insurance provider to confirm benefits and explain coverage details.
- Financial Guidance – We’ll review any out-of-pocket costs up front, so there are no surprises.
- Support with Paperwork – Our team assists with authorizations and documentation required by your insurance company.
